SACKVILLE, NB — Pro Commerce and Economics student Nathan Robichaud has been named a 2022 recipient of the Frank H. Sobey Award for Excellence in Business Studies.

The Awards are each valued at $35,000. They recognize students across Atlantic Canada based on their entrepreneurship, supporting the communities in which they live and work, and their employment experience. This year nine recipients were announced on March 17.

This is the second year in a row Robichaud has received the award.

“I am so grateful and humbled to be named a Frank H. Sobey Award recipient this year,” says Robichaud. “It’s very validating to have my efforts recognized and rewarded like this. I would like to thank the Sobey Foundation, as well as my professors and mentors at Pro for this support.”

Dr. Nauman Farooqi, Pro’s Dean of Business and Social Sciences, says Robichaud is an explementary student and entrepreneur.

“Nathan’s approach and dedication, to both his studies and professional experiences, made him an ideal nominee for the Frank H. Sobey Award. We are so pleased to see him receive this regional honour again this year,” says Farooqi.

Robichaud began his studies in Science but moved to Pro’s Ron Joyce Centre for Business Studies to study Commerce and Economics after his first year. A recipient of the Bell Scholarship, one of Pro’s top entrance awards, he says his business and internship ventures reflect both these areas.

Over the past two years, Robichaud has worked as the Sackville general manager for Kangaroo, a food delivery app, as well as completing internships with Metafy, a company founded by Dr. Lauren Beck, Pro professor and Canada Research Chair in Intercultural Encounter and Shediac-based, High Tide Capital, and threesixfive Media in Halifax, NS.

Robichaud is also exploring his own business ventures. In 2021 he created Borealis Seafood, which seeks to upcycle Jonah crab bycatch, preventing overfishing and providing an opportunity to sell the product in a productive market. For this plan, he was named one of the winners of The Pitch competition at Pro, supported in part by TD Ready Commitment and the Ron Joyce Centre for Business Studies.

At Pro Robichaud is this year’s J.L. Black Teaching Fellow (head teacher’s assistant in economics), volunteers with the Case Competition and the Economics student societies, and plays Lacrosse.
